Wild Orchid performing, c. 1998.Wild Orchid (1991-2002) were a United States band, featuring Stacy Ann Ferguson (later of the Black Eyed Peas), Stefanie Ridel and Renee Ilene Sandstrom (2 of them transplanted from Kids Incorporated).
At one time the pop trio were one of the best and most popular female vocal trios in the music business. Wild Orchid began while the girls were only in their mid-teens, songwriter Bobby Sandstrom, helped them write and record demos, several of which landed on the desks of industry heavyweights. They signed a music publishing deal with Sony, and soon had a label bidding war going.
In 1997 Wild Orchid released their self-titled debut album Wild Orchid. The largely self-written album sold nearly a million units worldwide, and included Billboard hits "Talk To Me" (a record that made Wild Orchid one of the few female groups in history to debut in the Top 10 of the Billboard Dance Chart, and was included in the hit movie Fools Rush In), "At Night I Pray," a pop ballad that spent 5 months on the Billboard Hot 100 and "Supernatural," which spent an amazing 5 months on the Billboard R&B Singles Chart. The album also received 2 Billboard Award nominations for "Talk To Me," 2 Lady Of Soul - Soul Train Award nominations, one for Album of The Year by A Group, Band or Duo and Best Music Video, for "Talk To Me" and an American Music Award nomination for Favorite R&B/Soul New Artist.
Wild Orchid spent most of 1996-1997 promoting their debut album, making apperances on the Ricki Lake show, Access Hollywood, MTV, RuPaul show, Hard Copy, VIBE and Soul Train, as well as a guest apperance on the show lived UPN sitcom Goode Behavior.
In late 1997, the group toured with 98 Degrees and NSYNC and the release of their second album followed, Oxygen which included the single "Be Mine" solidifying the gains of the first album. During a performance in New York City, the band invited current R&B sensation Eric West to appear with the band on stage.
On the strength of their increasing momentum and a couple of memorable appearances on E! Channel, Wild Orchid was chosen to host the ABC Family Channel's most popular Saturday morning show "Great Pretenders," which features chart hits lip-synched by everyday kids, while competing for top prizes. As if all this wasn't enough, most recently the group completed an exhaustive 52-city sold out tour with Cher and Cyndi Lauper.
In 2001 the group released Stuttering (Don't Say), the single quickly entered the Billboard singles chart in the Top 40, the group also had their own concert special on Much Music, on July 29, 2001 [1], but oddly after the song hit, the group broke up. Stacy joined the Hip-Hop group Black Eyed Peas in 2003 under the stage name Fergie.
In 2004 Wild Orchid reformed, only with Renee and Stefanie. Their album Hypnotic failed to make the Billboard charts.
